Master Planning
In 1976, Jon Coe co-authored the master plan for Woodland Park Zoo, widely considered a benchmark in zoological planning and development, pushing zoos across the country to re-imagine their own futures. Since then, CLR has authored over 60 master plans for zoos, aquariums, and conservation foundations. We utilize holistic planning strategies to consider the systems and ecology of the entire zoo campus in order to provide clients with an achievable roadmap to future success.
Feasibility Planning
As a critical first step in any project, a feasibility study confirms the vision aligns with the mission, site, facility, and funding. CLR provides expert insight and analysis to help clients articulate their goals and discover the opportunities and constraints that are unique to their institution. These studies are an essential part of starting projects on a solid conceptual foundation.
Research & Exhibit Design Development
CLR brings over 30 years of accumulated research and experience to develop cutting edge habitat solutions and lead the way forward in the constantly evolving standard for exhibit design. We consider animal welfare as paramount, driving our thinking and our process. Every project is an opportunity to learn and apply the latest research to develop deeply enriching habitats for animals, while providing safe and functional working environments and incredible experiences for visitors. This evolutionary thinking in habitats lies at the core of our purpose and defines who we are and what we do.
Construction Document Preparation
CLR utilizes a thoughtful and thorough process to understand the client’s vision, identify the challenges, and apply our experience and knowledge to craft the design from the early conceptual studies to detailed construction documents. Zoo projects have a unique complexity, including buildings and spaces for people as well as animals. We provide the experience necessary to skillfully document this range of conditions and maintain the concepts established during the beginning design phases.
Construction Phase Services
Construction administration is a demanding process to ensure the project vision is executed according to the construction documents. Zoo projects require meticulous attention to detail to manage communication with the owner, the contractor, and the wide range of specialists needed to bring an exhibit to life. CLR offers the experience and technical ability necessary to successfully guide clients through this exciting final stage of a project.
Fundraising & Promotional Imagery
Since its founding in the 1980s, CLR has produced high quality architectural illustrations to help clients visualize a project and get a thorough understanding of the details and design concepts. Today, we use a full range of hand drawn and digital modeling and animation techniques to fit the preferences of the client and the needs of the project. Clients, recognizing the quality of our illustrations and our intimate understanding of zoo work, often trust us to provide materials for their promotional and fundraising needs.
Cutting-Edge BIM & Software Utilization
While hand drawn work is a vital tool for exploring and advancing designs, we are also committed to utilizing state-of-the-art computer software for documentation and coordination. We seamlessly integrate our hand-drawn work with sophisticated Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows to stay ahead of the industry standards. Utilization of these modern techniques significantly improves the efficiency and quality of our communication with owners, engineers, and contractors.
