Cleveland Metroparks Zoo
Cleveland, OH
AZA-award winning, 5-acre, 3 habitat LEED Gold site provides the animals with various activity choices from swimming to wallowing to exercising on an inclined path.
Design Framework Characteristics
Project Type
African Elephant Crossing includes three habitats for elephants that provide the animals with various activity choices from swimming to wallowing to exercising on an inclined path. In the center of the exhibit is an Elephant Care and Visitor Center with seven parlors as well as a public viewing/interpretive space informing visitors about the animals and conservation, local and abroad. The complex also includes a small African Village with overlooks, gift shop, snacks, restrooms, and several exhibit areas for smaller animals, such as meerkats.
The entry crossing structure, which gives the exhibit its name, allows elephants to cross the same path visitors walk on, representing the need for elephants and humans to share spaces and resources. Zoo visitors are also able to enjoy daily demonstrations by the Zoo staff, inside and outside, explaining what goes into caring for elephants at a zoo.
African Elephant Crossing is LEED Gold Certified and was the first animal exhibit of this size to receive this designation. Along with following LEED guidelines, sustainable strategies implemented include reduced water use, concrete with high recycled material content, and FSC certified wood products.
