Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum of Natural History
Sioux Falls, SD
AZA-award winning entry experience with year-round, 180 degree views of Japanese Macaques in a naturalistic settings including simulated hot springs.
Project Type
The Great Plains Zoo Entry & Snow Monkey Exhibit is the first part of a two phase project that provides major enhancements to the Zoo’s entrance. The Great Plains Zoo is transforming their entry into a visitor and animal friendly experience including a new gateway framed by giraffe sculptures, a new entry plaza with a splash fountain, and new animal exhibits for both snow monkeys and flamingos.
Off the west side of the entry plaza is a Flamingo exhibit, which provides an outdoor habitat space for the flamingos during summer months, with a wading pool, beach, and nesting areas.
The main exhibit attraction is the snow monkey habitat, located off the south side of the entry plaza. The mesh enclosed exhibit is home to several Japanese Macaques, and is designed to replicate natural Japanese hot springs, where snow monkeys can be found bathing languorously with tourists. Visitors get their first look into the exhibit from the plaza through an open view shelter. From the main path, visitors also find an enclosed shelter with nose-to-nose glass views of snow monkeys lounging in the heated pool.
