Utah's Hogle Zoo
Salt Lake City, UT
The animals’ spaces in this 3-acre exhibit have been layered for richness and the ability for the animals and Zoo staff to alter the spaces over time for variability, while visitors can enjoy multiple underwater and overland view vantages and the staff can showcase animal behaviors while in close proximity to guests.
Design Framework Characteristics
Project Type
Rocky Shores showcases the bear as the flagship species in the complex landscape of the North American Northwest region. Also featured are other Northwest coast species such as seal, sea lion, river otter and eagle. Ethology, the scientific study of animal behavior in a natural environment was used as a basis for design and management of the exhibit. The animals’ spaces have been layered for richness and the ability for the animals and Zoo staff to alter the spaces over time for variability.
The Rocky Shores exhibit is located in the Northwest quadrant of the Zoo, nearly three acres in size, meeting or exceeding all current AZA and USDA animal standards. Multiple view vantages, underwater and overland, were created for visitors to observe the animal activity within the habitats. Demonstration spaces for staff interaction with the animals showcases animal behaviors while in close proximity to visitors.
The exhibits and support facilities prioritize animal health and well being, with immersive, dynamic environments for both animals and visitors. A state-of-the-art water filtration facility and system was implemented to support deep saltwater pools and fresh shallow water environments while using water efficiently. The animal building facilities include natural daylight and ventilation options and were planned efficiently to reduce energy use. A conservation practice to be implemented is a breeding facility for bears endangered in the wild.
