Design Framework Characteristics
Project Type
Tigers of the Realm immerses visitors and animals alike in a deep forest of tiger trails, pools, and pathways. Across nearly two acres of previously undeveloped land, two habitats are connected by a tiger trail through the woods and along undulating terrain, enabling exciting and intimate encounters with Amur tigers.
Beginning the journey from the highest point of the zoo, visitors follow mulched pathways under the shade of tree canopies towards the uppermost habitat. With a “light on the land” approach, the 9,000+ SF habitat includes full-grown trees, a shallow pool and rockwork beach, boulder outcroppings, and deadfall shelter for climbing and resting. Trees and exhibit barriers seem to blend seamlessly towards a shade shelter with glass for nose-to-nose viewing. As tigers explore the trail between the upper and lower habitats, visitors can follow along on their own elevated forest pathway through the existing woodlands.
Emerging from the forest edge and nestled in the hillside on the southern portion of the site, the 2,000 SF smaller flex habitat provides a steep rocky terrain of streams and pools with underwater viewing. Crawford Tigers of the Realm includes a 2,300 SF tiger holding facility with outdoor yards, as well as a 500 SF snack and restroom building that anchors the nearby Treetop Outpost children’s play area.
