Design Framework Characteristics
Project Type
African Grasslands features elephants, giraffe, rhinos and multiple hoofstock species in an expansive and immersive, naturalistic mixed-species habitat setting. Many of the site’s existing shade trees were retained to create an instant mature landscape and valuable shade for animals and guests. The exhibit includes multiple animal activity stations throughout, strategically located to encourage animal and guest movement. State-of-the-art animal management facilities and off-exhibit yards allow guests winter viewing of elephants and giraffe.
A new “Safari Lodge” serves as a hub for visitor services, including food & beverage and restrooms, and provides indoor and outdoor seating with spectacular panoramic views of the elephant water-hole and mixed-species habitat beyond. The existing train was redeveloped and rerouted to provide exclusive views of the mixed-species habitats and a new station is located at the center of the Grasslands experience.
A new Game Management Headquarters provides guests with a unique look at an authentic management zone found in rural Africa, including safari vehicles, animal transport crates, and an real Bell 47 helicopter. Located in a naturally hilly and vegetated zone within the Zoo, the animal collection here includes lions, cheetah, bongo, sable antelope and tortoise. An overnight Bush Camp on the edge of the lion habitat completes the authentic safari experience.

"One of our challenges is to help our visitors understand the mission of our Zoo - a mission of conservation and education. The work that CLR does enables that mission, it helps to tell the story of the importance of animals."
