Design Framework Characteristics
Project Type
CLR’s Comprehensive Capital Master Plan for the Oregon Zoo envisioned the transformation of the the Zoo into a state-of-the-art campus with game-changing exhibits. With a sole focus on animal choice and experience, Elephant Lands was the first major project of the Master Plan to be designed and built. It established an expansive Asian elephant habitat comprised of flexible and diverse spaces that promote animal choice and herd socialization.
At 6.5 acres the exhibit is four times larger than the Zoo’s previous elephant exhibit. The animals are allowed 24/7 choice where they want to go in this space, with the freedom to explore hilly corridors, time-released feeders, shade structures, activity trees, and massive pools large enough to accommodate the entire herd. Other key program elements include new indoor habitats for elephants, support facilities for animal management, and new guest path systems, activities, and amenities.
Elephant Lands is LEED Gold certified. Key sustainability features include: stormwater planters, green roof, solar power, solar hot water, geothermal systems, green materials & reuse, habitat restoration strategies, natural ventilation, and other initiatives.
"For a long time I was anti-zoo, but coming up here and seeing how wonderfully the animals are treated and the open spaces, and the realization that most people are not blessed to travel globally, and how else can children learn about animals up close and personal… I think Elephant Lands solidified in my mind that this is really okay. This exhibit helped me see the value of zoos."
