Santa Ana Zoo
Santa Ana, CA
Project Type
The final report represented completion of the master planning process for the Santa Ana Zoo, summarizing over 8 months of site inventory, analysis, concept testing, and plan development. The Facility Master Plan presented a comprehensive approach for how the Santa Ana Zoo can be developed over the next 15-20 years. Concepts for the various project zones were backed by both mission drivers, such as collection diversity and conservation/education initiatives, as well as physical site campus drivers including the beautiful mature trees and several of the more recently developed exhibit attractions. The Strategic Business Plan (under separate cover), developed hand in hand with the Facilities Plan, informed all aspects of the vision to enhance the guest experience, increase revenue opportunities, and bolster mission driven programs.
Throughout the eight-month Planning Process, several new ideas and concepts were generated by the Planning Team, comprised of the Zoo, FOSAZ, City, CLR and Zoo Advisors. During the initial stages of the Planning Process, CLR facilitated workshops with the full Planning Team to discuss key broad issues such as land use, visitor and service circulation, parking and access, and city and regional context. During the later stages of the Planning Process, special focused discussions were conducted with various departments (animal, health, operations, etc.) to discuss site-specific issues and new development concepts.
