The LA Zoo’s Red Apes of the Rainforest links up multiple mesh habitats and allows orangutans to pass over the exhibit entrance via a mesh-enclosed passageway – this design will evolve over time and inspire Zoo360 at the Philadelphia Zoo over a decade later. Future Principal Gregg Leicester joins the firm. This year sees the publication of the authoritative 3-volume Encyclopedia of World Zoos, with extensive entries on “Master Planning” and “Mixed-Species Habitats” by Jon Coe.

CLR’s Master Plan for Utah’s Hogle Zoo becomes a blueprint allowing the Zoo to more than double its attendance over the subsequent 10-year period. Following the Master Plan, CLR’s first of many Entry Complexes was designed and constructed, bringing a much-needed new identity to the Zoo’s front door as well as key revenue elements with a new gift shop and a new events center.
