Destination Discovery enters construction! Destination Discovery is a new children’s zoo at the Saint Louis Zoo. The general character of this 3 1/2-acre project is a combination of playful whimsy combined with biophilic mimicry ground firmly with an earthy rusticism. A wonderful range of experiences and activities are designed to provide guests, primarily focused on children aged 2-10 years, with close encounters with animals and their caretakers to engender empathy. Congratulations to the Oregon Zoo for once again earning greater Portland area voter support for their new Campus Plan! CLR Design is proud of this effort as the continuation of our 15 years of successful collaboration with the Oregon Zoo. We cannot wait to see what comes next!
The approval of Measure 26-244 in May of 2024 authorizes $380 million in bonds to support new facilities at the zoo as proposed in the Oregon Zoo 2024 Capus Plan. This plan is the result of a comprehensive year-long process involving a diverse group of individuals from the Oregon Zoo, Metro Parks, CLR design, and our team of dedicated engineers and consultants as well as the feedback of hundreds of community members and partners. The many exciting improvements proposed focus on the oldest areas of the zoo and center around animal wellbeing, guest amenities, accessibility, sustainability, and resilience. Work has already begun on the reimagination of the Zoo entry with much more to come!

Each year, 140 million people visit AZA accredited zoos. They all come for the same reason. To connect with wildlife… and each other. The new Clayton Family Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Campus follows Asian Trek as the second major project derived from the Zoo Knoxville Master Plan. As part of a new Adventure Education approach, the project will merge two key education experiences and spaces – an indoor, science-based lab classroom for hands-on study and a dipnet wildlife pond – both linked together with a series of boardwalks and decks. Other outdoor experiences will include conservation bogs and marshes, various turtle and tortoise habitats and a new otter exhibit. The building’s location is strategically placed with prime frontage to the main entry plaza giving visitors a key animal experience as they come through the ticketing gate while strengthening the clustering of all-season attractions at the zoo entrance. The 2.5-acre experience will be anchored by a combination of conservatory sky-lit habitats and beautiful museum-quality gallery exhibits. Features will include hands-on areas for research and discovery, views into a behind-the-scenes biosecure conservation room and turtle incubation areas as well as a Turtle and Tortoise Greenhouse experience where guests can observe and interact with the Herpetology staff managing this important collection of animals.
