Be transported. Within a few acres, a habitat transect may range from the Asian floodplains to upland plateaus to the Himalayas in Nepal. A smaller slice may feature emperor penguins, snow petrels and an Antarctic fur seal. We weave together a sequence of realistic environments that integrates landscape, animal habitats and local culture. Linked by naturalistic ecotones, transects feature animals in habitats that simulate their lives in the wild, connected with additional habitats in broad, geographic succession. Using multiple layers, paths and cultural zones, we create stimulating environments for animals that engage, inform and transport visitors.
Cultural touchstones help to immerse visitors in animals’ native environment. An architectural element or simulated artifact that is indigenous to the region aids in furthering visitors’ interest and understanding. Unique textiles and dwellings that represent a specific culture provide additional layers of engagement and make the habitat transition more compelling.
Large or small, habitat transects can also convey important messages about conservation programs, endangered species and climate change effects that are specific to the region and will further connect visitors with the animals.
